Going to the Four Corners

On Sunday February 21, 2010 a group of six from St. Peters journeyed to Westerly for a meeting with folks from Christ Church. The purpose of this gathering was to discuss in more detail the proposed Mission and Outreach trip to Navajoland this coming summer.  For the past seven years, Christ Church has actively sponsored mission trips to the Navajo Reservation in the Four Corners of the American southwest (AZ, UT, NM, CO), the purpose of which have been twofold: help in the upgrading of the physical buildings on the reservation, and secondly, the hosting of a Vacation Bible School for children.

Over pizza, the leaders from Christ Church told us of some of their personal experiences, and expressed to us their infectious enthusiasm for the mission. They were absolutely delighted that a group from St. Peters might be joining them this summer as they once again visit these friends in the Four Corners.

To promote the trip, and to answer specific questions that may arise, a group from Christ Church will join us at St. Peter’s on Sunday, March 14, during the 9 o'clock hour Adult Forum. Everyone is invited to attend, whether you think you might like to attend this year, or perhaps are just curious about what mission trips look like.

  • A group from Christ Church will fly from Providence to Phoenix, AZ on Friday, July 9.  Work week begins Monday, July 12, and runs for five days. Vacation Bible School starts Monday, July 19, and runs for four days.  Either one or both weeks can be chosen.  Casey will join the group for the second week.
  • Southwest Airlines has a direct flight between Providence and Phoenix.  The lowest, currently advertized price (available only over the internet): $184 each way plus taxes, etc. St. Peter’s will cover the expense of ground transportation (probably a rental van) for the days involved.
  • Room and board will be $20/ day, payable in advance.
  • The nearest medical facility is located at Tuba City, Arizona, a two to three hour drive away.  Keep in mind that summer temperatures in northern Arizona can reach 110 degrees, and that the northern plateau country has an elevation of between 5,000 and 6,000 feet (not a problem for healthy individuals, but a possible risk for anyone with heart or pulmonary conditions).
  • There are eight open spaces for this trip
  • One of the objectives of the work crew this year will be to replace the electric wiring of the main hall,so the participation of a professional electrician is highly sought after.

In the interim between now and March 14, if you have questions, please direct them to the Church Office, (401-783-4623) or personally speak to Casey or Wheaton Vaughan. If you care to reserve a place, be sure to give us your name/s and contact information as soon as you can.
