The Season of Advent
The holy season of Advent is fast upon us. It's incredible to think that a year has already gone by, and we are once again preparing ourselves for the celebration of Christ's humble entrance into the world.
When you arrive at church during Advent, you will be greeted by signs that say, "Slow down. Quiet. It's Advent." They are meant to remind us of the counter-cultural call of this season to a slower, more contemplative pace. During these holy four weeks, we are asked to consider the ways in which our hearts and lives are cluttered by the distractions of the world. Is there room in ourselves for God to enter, or are we all-too-like the infamous innkeepers of Bethlehem, who "had no room."
During Advent, may you listen for the still, small voice of God (1Kings 19:11-12), despite the blaring of televsion advertisements, Christmas carol muzak in shopping malls, and the crush of crowds in stores. May you rededicate yourself to the desire for holiness and prepare yourself to truly celebrate the birth of the Messiah. And in the face of so much despair, hopelessness and challenge in our world, this season may you make your song "O Come, O Come Emmanuel."
