St. Peter’s provides many opportunities to serve the Lord through service to the parish, its members and the local community.

Sunday mornings

Many volunteers, young and old, contribute to making the Sunday morning masses meaningful worship experiences.  There are many ways that you can volunteer to participate.  The altar guild and flower arranger set up the altar to the Glory of the Lord.  During the mass, Lay Eucharistic Ministers, choir members, lector, torch bearers, chalice bearer, crucifer and ushers contribute to an orderly and reverent worship.   Sunday School teachers lead our young worshippers in lessons, activities and crafts.  Bakers and servers share their talents during the fellowship time following the mass.  Contact Father Craig and tell him the way you would like to serve.

Community Market

The Community Market [hyperlink to the CM page] is St. Peter’s primary outreach activity.  There is a lot of work and activity that goes into running a market such as ours; we have four managers who oversee the weekly Friday market and we have a buyer who is responsible for placing a weekly order with the RI Food Bank. One person helps with keeping statistics on the numbers of guests that come through the market monthly and monitors our budget. Since our budget is separate from that of the church, we raise every penny we spend. We have someone who specializes in writing grants; we have a Food Safety Officer; we have a crew that unloads the food delivery from the Rhode Island Food Bank every Tuesday; we have people who attend networking meetings of other local social service agencies that serve clients like ours; others make food runs on Friday to various stores so that we can benefit from their overflow. Some people help out seasonally on certain special food intake drives; others help out with special market days, such as the Thanksgiving market in November and the Christmas "winter wear" give-away in December; still others help plan fund raisers throughout the year. In all, there are about 60 volunteers who help on Fridays, throughout the week and throughout the year for the Community Market and its many weekly client-guests.

Buildings and Grounds

Perhaps you like to volunteer to help with the physical aspects of maintaining the parish and grounds.  With the challenges of maintain our historic building, there are always opportunities to contribute your time and talent with the Buildings and Grounds Committee. If a green thumb is your area of expertise, consider working with our garden grounds which were highlighted in the 2019 URI Master Gardeners Tour.

Home-bounds and the Immobile

One of the most rewarding experiences is visiting and assisting those in our parish who have become home-bound.  Many of these folks have fascinating stories to share, if we take the time to listen.  At St. Peters, we have volunteer Lay Eucharist Visitors who are lay persons authorized to take the consecrated elements, in a timely manner, following a Celebration of Holy Eucharist to members of the congregation who, by reason of illness or infirmity, were unable to be present at the Celebration of the Eucharist.

We also provide opportunities for volunteers willing to be contacted when fellow parishioners need rides to church, appointments, shopping, etc.

Special Events

There are many opportunities for volunteers to help with the various hospitality events and fund-raising activities, e.g., Holiday Bazaar, community dinners, Easter egg hunt, Brothers Keeper concerts, and others too numerous to mention.
